The smartphone camera looks finished. It is not. While unit growth has plateaued, value per module is climbing, and it is climbing toward the most precise components rather than the most visible ones.
The compact camera module market sits near USD 36 to 41 billion in 2025 and grows in the mid-single digits, but that average hides the real story. Within it, the voice coil motor, the actuator behind autofocus and image stabilization, is the fastest growing component at roughly 7 percent compound growth. A periscope telephoto module commands USD 55 to 90 per unit against USD 8 to 15 for a basic rear camera. The premium lives in the mechanism, not the glass.
Folded optics are the driver. To deliver 5x to 10x optical zoom inside a sub-10mm housing, manufacturers fold the light path through prisms, which multiplies component count and collapses the tolerance budget. Long-stroke actuators, prism stabilization, and closed-loop position sensing all become mandatory. LG Innotek's tetraprism module for the iPhone and Samsung's 200 megapixel continuous-zoom sensor are not incremental; they redefine what an assembly line must hold to spec.
This is where automation stops being optional. Hitting micron-level alignment by hand is impossible at flagship volume. Automated coil winding, laser welding, and inline optical inspection have cut defect rates by 15 to 25 percent on high-volume lines, and active alignment robotics is now the price of entry for premium work. The supply base reflects it: a limited set of vendors provides high-precision bobbins and micro-welding, so tooling lead times can decide time to market.
The takeaway is that imaging hardware is becoming a precision-mechanics business wearing an optics label. The winners will be the firms whose process control, not whose marketing, can guarantee a periscope module at scale. As the same actuator expertise migrates into automotive vision and extended reality, that capability compounds across markets rather than peaking with the phone cycle.
